Jan. 25 - 29
This week we finished up a study of Waste in Our World with an in-class field trip about wind turbines. We had the chance to connect with experts from Relay, to learn about wind power as an alternate source of energy. We learned so much!
We learned that coal, oil natural gas and nuclear energy are not the cleanest or most renewable sources of energy. We learned the difference between a wind turbine and a wind mill. We recorded data from 2 experiments and learned that "the more blades a wind turbine has the more electricity it produces." We also learned that the design of wind turbines from light materials with aerodynamic shape are more effective.
Ask me to explain more about what I learned in my own words!

We learned about Hazardous Waste - what it is, what the symbols are, and how to dispose of it properly.
We continue to develop our vocabulary and wrote a a 3 paragraph piece comparing the character's Olemaun and Karana's experiences with "outsiders." We continue to focus on vocabulary development through disciplinary word study.
We learned how to create a character arc from Pixar experts and started research on our Genius Hour topic of choice.
