Week of Jan. 11-15

 When In Person Classes resumed, we were so happy to see each other again! After a week of sharing online in reading groups and about our Winter Break, we jumped  into some new topics. 


In Social Studies and Language Arts (Reading Comprehension), we started a new novel study about Olemaun. This is a true story about Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton. The story is a biographical account of her experiences at residential school in Aklavik, NWT.  Ask me to tell you about the story!

We have begun to study vocabulary more deeply by trying to define, give examples and make connections to new words we are hearing. In science, we learned what "biodegradability" means. We watched some videos to learn which things break down in nature and which items don't for a long time. We are in the process of making a diagram to show the Lifecycle of a Product from raw materials to goods to hopefully recycling, reducing and reuse of the product.

In math, we worked on comparing fractions. We had some challenging brain teasers to think about. Ask me how to solve the Cake pieces problem  or 8 pieces of a Donut with only 3 slices of a knife. We also made fractions strips to compare fractions and we played the fraction strip game!



In writing we are learning from the experts at PIXAR! We are thinking about characters deeply and about the story worlds that writers create. We have done a number of short writing activities in preparation for writing a story.

Last week of School 2021

This last week of school has been a wonderful mix of finishing up, cleaning up, playing games and doing the last of our performances. We listened to each group's Reader's Theatre. They were really funny stories. We played Chess, Capture the Flag, Kick Ball and Mad Libs.  We danced to Go Noodle. We watched some hilarious Jib Jabs that Mr. Christie created of our classmates:) We very much enjoyed the Grade Four Farewell Video created by the younger students and the Crumpled Paper Video of the Teachers at Tuscany. Week of Oct.5 - Oct. 8

On the Land with Elder Saa'kokoto  This week we made our second trip to the Coulee to sit in circle with Elder Saa'kokoto.  We learned some new Blackfoot words and sang a song to honor N'aa. We used our senses to listen and notice more deeply.  We discussed how the use of this land has changed over time. Letter Writing and Storyboarding   We typed up our letters to Honourable Sonya Savage about the Alberta Parks Issue.  We also started a story about an animal that might live in the Coulee.  From an animals' perspective, how might they feel about people in their space?  We tried to step inside the thoughts and feelings of an animal and created a comic-book storyboard to tell our story.   Coulee Landscape Artwork After completing our sketch we added colour to our landscape with oil pastel. Week of Feb. 22 - 26

This week we finished our sketches from The Secret Path and also drew pictures and wrote paragraphs to explain what reconciliation means. We hope you enjoyed seeing them in our Celebration of Learning. We worked on writing our Story Beginnings! We are very excited to create stories finally after all the expert advice from Pixar story creators. In math, we reviewed how to find perimeter and learned how to find area.  We continue with area next week.  In gym we started yoga and are getting more flexible! We wore our Pink shirts and discussed what bullying means. We heard a good story about a boy who feels invisible until a new friend includes him.  We made a frayer model for the word inclusion.  Ask me what this word means!  In science we made a bucket in preparation for the Bucket Challenges next week in our new science unit about Simple Machines.
